"We went to a yard sale....and bought the yard!."
That's how shop owner Anita Butler describes
the start of Wooden Spools Quilt Shop.

It was 1997 and the local quilt shop had moved, leaving the quilters in the rural village of Etna, California, with a 35 mile drive to purchase as much as a spool of thread! Anita had worked for a quilt shop for several years and was currently managing the local branch library when the Victorian Cottage next door to the library had a yard sale. She and her husband, Dave, puchased the yard (and the house) and turned it into Wooden Spools Quilt Shop.

Dave had recently retired from the U.S. Forest Service and had planned to become the "woodworking" end of Wooden Spools, designing and manufacturing custom sewing centers and quilt racks. Now, some 4,000 quilts later, Dave does all the custom quilting for the shop, as well as Featherweight Restoration and sales of the Handi-Quilter Machines.

In 2003 they moved Wooden Spools to Yreka, California, to be closer to I-5. "We are the Northern-most Quilt Shop in California, located just a few miles from the Oregon border," says Dave. Being just a block off the freeway makes their location easily accessible to I-5 travelers. A parking lot in the back provides ample parking for our customers.

Wooden Spools is not only a full service quilt shop, but also carries notions and supplies for the home seamstress, including the vast assortment of interfacings, zippers, seam binding, and embroidery supplies. "We had planned to 'try' it for 5 years, the owners state; however, now in year 13, Wooden Spools is going strong with a selection of over 2500 bolts of fabric. Anita and Dave are familar to many Quilt Guilds, visiting as many as 14 Quilt Shows a year with their vendor's booth.

This husband and wife team have been married for 42 years and have made their home in Siskiyou County for over 35 years. They are the parents of two grown children, Mark Butler and Cathi Butler Sandall and the proud grandparents of a 7 year old grandson, Dylan Sandall. They are currently anticipating the arrival of a new Baby Sandall in July.
